FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT FILLERS
So What are Fillers?
Fillers are a cosmetic treatment option to help reduce the signs of aging or enhance existing physical features. Many people might think of fillers for a solution to create a plumper, fuller lip, but fillers can add volume and soften wrinkles in many different treatment areas.
When you get fillers, you are getting an injection of a gel that is the same formula as a naturally-occurring substance found in your body’s skin and joints called hyaluronic acid. A small amount of this type of filler is injected into the treatment area with a tiny needle -- don’t worry, it doesn’t hurt more than a few small pinches -- and can be used to:
Smooth the appearance of wrinkles, grooves, and lines on your face
Subtly reshape cheekbones, jawline, or lips
Reduce appearance of under-eye hollows and tear troughs
An appointment for fillers takes about one hour, but only a fraction of that appointment time is spent actually in the injection phase. No matter what area you’re treating with fillers, you’ll notice results right away (dermal fillers work fast)! The fillers continue to do their job and settle as they integrate with your tissue. This means you could continue to see visible changes and improvements for the next two weeks or so following your injection. Around that two-week mark, we like to book a follow-up appointment to make sure you’re getting the results you hoped for. The length of time the visible improvements from your treatment last varies depending on the treatment, your age, and your lifestyle. But, generally, hyaluronic acid-based fillers (the kind we use at The Magic Room) last for about six to 18 months depending on the type of filler.
First time getting Fillers in Winnipeg?
Here’s what to expect and plan for before and after
An appointment for fillers takes about one hour. After your full assessment, the injector specialist will determine the number of injections required to achieve your desired results. The number of syringes varies for treatments. Most commonly 1 syringe is needed for lips, chin, or nasolabial folds (that’s the smile line that runs from below your nose and above your top lip). 1-2 for cheeks. 2-3 for jaw lines. The exact number needed varies for each person, but the amount you will need is something you will learn during your consultation.
Your skin will be cleansed to remove any make-up or oil for optimal results. When administered, the injections feel similar to being pinched and may leave a small, mosquito-bite-like bump for a few hours afterward.
Because fillers are not a surgical procedure, there’s no downtime or recovery to worry about. You can be in and out for a treatment over your lunch break and get back to your regular routine almost immediately.
Pre/Post Filler Treatment Guidelines
Your injector will speak to you about the before and after rules of fillers, but, in general, these guidelines are recommended to be followed for optimal results.
For best results, before your filler treatment you should:
Not drink alcohol for 48 hours beforehand to minimize bruising
Avoid blood-thinning medications like Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, and Midol for 3 - 5 days prior to treatment. If they’re necessary, consider rescheduling your appointment
Avoid arthritis medication such as Excedrin, Voltara, Plavix, or St. John’s Wort for 10 days ahead of time
Avoid harsh skin products for a day or two before your appointment
Avoid Vitamin E, garlic pills, ginseng, ginger, cinnamon, sushi, sunflower / pumpkin / flax seeds, fish oils, and omegas and green tea for 3 - 5 days leading up to your appointment
Avoid intense workouts for two days leading up to your treatment
Avoid dental work at least 2 weeks prior to receiving the treatment
Please note if you are using prescription aspirin or blood thinners, do not discontinue use unless permitted by your physician. If you have a history of cold sores, consult your physician regarding pre-care instructions.
Swelling, redness and bruising and pain can occur after your treatment.
For best results, after your filler treatment you should:
Do not touch, rub or massage the injection sites unless instructed
Avoid the gym or intense workouts for 2 - 3 days
Avoid alcohol and make-up application for 24 hours
Avoid air travel after treatment for 3 days
Stay away from excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga) for 2 - 3 days
Protect the area from sun exposure
Do not sleep on your face and keep your head elevated on pillows for the first few nights following your treatment
Drink plenty of water
Avoid dental work at least 2 weeks after receiving the treatment
Discontinue the use of retinol products for 2 - 3 days
Are Teoxane, Revanesse, Restylane, and Juvederm right for you?
If you want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around your mouth or on your forehead or enhance facial features like your lips or jawline, then fillers may be just the treatment you’re looking for.
Areas you can address with these treatments include:
Lips (add volume and plumpness for thinner lips)
Cheeks (to subtly contour or shape facial features)
Marionette lines (soften grooves in the areas that sag over time on either side of your face between your lower lip and chin)
Tear troughs (reducing shadows ands hollows caused by the creased line underneath your eye and above the upper cheek)
Smile lines
At The Magic Room, we utilize fillers from a number of popular brands and your nurse injector will select which is best for you based on the specific treatment sought and your desired outcomes. While fillers are substantially similar, here’s the 411 on each (click the links to learn more):
Teoxane - Used to brighten and revive the look of your eyes. Hollows and dark shadows are significantly reduced by injecting hyaluronic acid (the same stuff that’s naturally found in your skin, joints, and eyeballs) into the treatment area.
Revanesse - Used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, particularly around your mouth. Lines associated with smiling are smoothed out, and the formula is designed for a more gradual breakdown over time, so there’s no dramatic changes as the injection wears off. It can also be used to subtly shape the jawline and cheekbones.
Restylane - Used to restore a youthful appearance by filling in fine lines and wrinkles and adding volume. The Restylane product line has formulas tailored for various treatment areas on your face.
Juvederm - Used for a variety of facial treatments to create a natural-looking appearance with reduced signs of aging. Within the product line, there are different types of fillers to address different age-related concerns. This allows complete tailoring of treatments based on your specific cosmetic goals.
How much do Fillers cost?
As mentioned above, the amount of syringes varies for treatments, most commonly 1-3. Pricing for treatments is based on the number of syringes required. One syringe (1ml) typically costs $585. Please see our Injectables price list for current pricing.
Does getting lip and dermal fillers hurt?
This is relative to each individual, but, in general, receiving a filler treatment is not painful - if it was, you wouldn’t see so many people doing it. We like to think of it as a short series of small pinches. Slightly unpleasant, but definitely tolerable. And once you experience it the first time, subsequent treatments are not so bad.
What does having Fillers feel like?
Immediately after your fillers are injected, you will feel a sensation of fullness in the area. That’s because a small amount of fluid has just been added to a targeted spot in your face or lips. Your body will get used to this very quickly and soon you will not notice that anything feels different.
It’s totally normal to experience some swelling, tenderness, itchiness, and redness in the area where the filler is injected. You can reduce your risk of bruising by avoiding Ibuprofen or Aspirin before your treatment.
With some people, these reactions go away very soon after the treatment. For others, it may be a few hours or even a day or two for signs of redness and swelling to disappear in the treatment area. However, if you see signs of infection, get a fever, or notice the area seems hot to the touch, please contact us immediately for advice and recommendations.
Over time, your body will naturally absorb and remove the filler. Because everyone’s body chemistry is different, the length of time your fillers will last varies. It also depends on the formula chosen for your treatment. Depending on all these factors, your fillers could last anywhere from six to 18 months. During your follow-up consultations, we can advise you on how regularly to come back to keep up the results.
Can guys get fillers, too?
Yes! Fillers are a popular treatment for men as well. Men typically seek filler treatments for the same primary reason women do - to reduce facial wrinkles or enhance specific facial features. Men typically get fillers under the eyes to reduce the tired or puffy look of tear troughs or in their cheeks to contour the look of their face and strengthen their jawline. Men also receive filler treatments to smooth out specific lines around the mouth or wrinkles on their foreheads.
At what age can you start getting Fillers?
Our selfie-obsessed, Instagram and TikTok-loving culture has seen the demand for fillers rise among young adults and even teenagers. Lip fillers are extremely popular and the best way to get that bee stung lip look of your favorite Kardashian, celebrity or social influencer. In Canada there is no age restriction, but in general we recommend a minimum age of 18 before seeking facial or dermal filler treatments.
In general, as you age your body produces a little less collagen and elastin each year. There’s some debate about what age you are when your collagen levels start to dip, but it’s somewhere between 20 and 25. Both collagen and elastin play a role in keeping your skin youthful. As these levels decrease over time, fillers can be a great, non-surgical method of keeping a youthful appearance. As fillers continue to gain in popularity and become as mainstream as any other personal service, like going for a haircut or a manicure, we see clients in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s, and older coming in for their first treatments and achieving fantastic results.
What’s the difference between Fillers, Botox and PRP Treatments?
Many med spas, including The Magic Room, offer a variety of injectable treatments including fillers, Botox, and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments. When it comes to the end result, there is some overlap in these treatments, but each takes a different approach.
In contrast, Botox achieves its anti-wrinkle results by blocking nerve signals to your facial muscles, which relaxes the skin and helps to eliminate tightness and wrinkles. You’ll often find Botox used in the upper parts of the face, addressing forehead creases, laugh lines, and crow’s feet. You can learn more about our Botox treatments here.
PRP treatments take an altogether different approach by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production for natural, gradual rejuvenation. You can learn more about our PRP treatments here.
